Game Report
Harvard began its season on the wrong foot, as it fell
to Penn, 1-0. It was a tough contest, in which Harvard had many opportunities to win
the game, but couldn't finish it when they needed to. For most of the game, Harvard
seemed to control the flow of the game. On defense, Ricky Le and Ryan Kelly were
confident and unbeatable. The only goal of the game came when Jordan Dupuis
attempted to punch a high ball out trouble, and the defense was unable to adjust quickly
enough to the ball's failure to clear the penalty area. An opportunistic Steve Cohen
put it in with about 19 minutes remaining in the game.
Otherwise, Penn rarely got into scoring position, and
hacked their way out of trouble in their own end. All they had to do in the final
minutes was pack it in at their end. They earned a handful of yellow cards, still
several short of the number that could have been awarded, and hardly played the type of
soccer you would otherwise expect from Quakers. Tom McLaughlin, last year's Ivy
scoring champion, has the honor of The bottom line is that their physical play worked, and
although it's not a very pleasant or skillful brand of game to watch, it did the trick:
their winning streak now stands at 9. The last team to beat them is Harvard, last
year.
The Crimson used 15 players: Dupuis (G), Le, Cantagallo,
Chijoke, Kelly, Newman, (D), Hench, Keeton, Montoy, Wyant, Hollinger (M), McLaughlin,
McCluskey, Viders (F).
