BURLINGTON, VT--  A goal by Spencer George (Mission Viejo, CA) with
just under a minute to play gave Harvard University a 1-0 win over the
University of Vermont in collegiate men's soccer at Centennial Field on
Wednesday afternoon.

Harvard Crimson story

Vermont controlled play in the early going and then had two great
second-half chances in attempt to take the lead. In the 70th minute, a
header by the Cats' Kevin Smyth (Toronto, ONT) went just wide and with
three minutes to play, Matt Chavez (Austin, TX) also nodded one wide of the
goal from 10 yards out.

With 53 seconds left in regulation the Crimson (2-1-1) struck for
the game-winner. Off a feed from Ryan Kelly (Springfield, MA), George, from
15 yards out lobbed the ball over Vermont goalkeeper Chris Shaver (Moon
Township, PA) for the only marker in the hard-fought affair.

Harvard keeper Dan Mejias (Garnerville, NY) made three saves in
posting his second shutout of the season. In the other crease, Shaver also
made three stops for the Cats (3-4-0), who lost for the third straight
game.

Vermont will play the second game of the current five-game
homestand hosting Albany this Saturday at 1 pm at Centennial Field.
The Crimson wraps up a four-game road swing with a game at Brown on
Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
