Yale got on the board early, as Brian Lavin (Guilford, CT) took a feed from sophomore Steve Gibbons (Mesquite, TX) and rocketed it past Harvard goalie Dan Mejias (Garnerville, NY) for the lead 2:08 into the first half. The Crimson responded with two goals before the end of the first stanza. In the 18th minute, junior Mike Peller (Gill, MA) launched a cross to freshman Grayson Sugarman (Cincinnatti, OH), who laid it off to classmate Ladd Fritz (Tulsa, OK). Fritz beat Yale keeper Danny Moss (Arlington, VA) for the equalizing tally. In the waning minutes of the half, Kelly set up freshman Kevin Ara (Upland, CA) for the go-ahead goal at 42:38. The Bulldogs came out firing in the second frame, and knotted the score at two when Gibbons took a pass from Jay Alberts (Sunset Mills, MO) and beat Mejias to his left. The Crimson got what proved to be the game winning goal, when Kelly collected a loose ball and rocketed it from about 18 yards out to the right of Moss in the 50th minute. Despite good opportunities down the stretch, neither team would score again. Mejias recorded seven saves, while Moss had four in a losing effort. The Crimson will play again on
Tuesday at Holy Cross, while Yale is home on Friday evening against
Pennsylvania. Jamie Weir |
