PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The
Harvard women's soccer team scored its first Ivy League win of the season
(and eighth consecutive Ancient Eight win overall) with a 2-1 victory over
homestanding Pennsylvania this afternoon. The Crimson improves its overall
record to 2-1, while the Quakers fall to 2-2.
After a physical yet scoreless first half, Penn got on the board first
when Heather Taylor took an assist from Kellianne Toland and beat Harvard
goalie Cheryl Gunther (Hauppauge, NY) for the 1-0 lead in the 58th minute.
Joey Yenne (St. Cloud, MN) tallied the equalizer when she picked up a
loose ball from about 18 yards out and beat Penn keeper Katherine Hart
into the top right corner of the net. Less than a minute later, Erin
Aeschliman (Keene, NH) picked up her own rebound, fed it to senior
midfielder Meredith Stewart (Holliston, MA), who beat Hart for the
eventual game-winning goal.
Hart made six saves for the hosts, while Gunther made the most of her
first start in 2000. She tallied two saves to post her 11th consecutive
regular-season win, and extends her regular-season unbeaten streak to 14
games. Harvard handed the Quakers their first loss on their home field
since October 31, 1998.
The Crimson will be in action again on Tuesday evening (September 19),
when the squad travels to Hartford to take on the 10th-ranked Hawks at 7
p.m.
