The Aggies improve to 3-1 on the season, while Harvard opens at 0-1 for the first time in a decade. A&M got on the board early as Heather Ragsdale (Arlington, TX) took a feed from Juli Goin (Mesquite, TX), beat a Harvard defender, and beat Crimson goalie Mollie Durkin (Kirkland, WA) for the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game. The sophomore struck again in the 33rd minute of play, when Amber Childers (Arlington, TX) launched a corner kick into play, and Ragsdale buried it to the right of Durkin, giving A&M the 2-0 lead headed into halftime. Harvard clamped down defensively after that, but was unable to generate much offensive pressure. The two teams played a tight second stanza, with A&M's final goal coming in the final two minutes of play when Ragsdale launched a corner kick into a waiting Kristen Strutz (Spring, TX), who scored her first collegiate goal and iced the victory for the Aggies. Durkin made five saves in her collegiate debut, while Angela Barker (Richardson, TX) and Esther Thompson (Waxhaw, NC) each played 45 minutes, sharing the shutout. Thompson made the only two necessary Aggie saves on the afternoon. The Crimson dropped it's first season-opening decision since a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of Providence in 1990. In the history of the program, Harvard has lost its season opener just four times. In addition, the Crimson saw its 12-game regular-season unbeaten streak, dating back to last season, snapped. Harvard is in action again next Friday when it hosts the Catamounts of the University of Vermont at 3 p.m. Submitted by Jamie Weir |
