Harvard Yale CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Sophomore forward Joey Yenne (St. Cloud, MN) scored three goals to tie her career high and help the Harvard women's soccer team to a 3-1 defeat of Ivy rival Yale on Saturday afternoon on Ohiri Field. The Crimson improves to 8-2 on the season with its sixth consecutive victory, and is 3-1 in Ivy play. Yale falls to 7-5-1 and 1-3 in Ancient Eight contests. Yenne began her afternoon with a tally roughly 35 minutes into the game. She picked up a loose ball about 30 yards out, beat a pair of defenders, and beat Yale keeper Sarah Peterson (Seattle, WA) for the 1-0 lead. That lead would hold until after intermission. Yenne came back and scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. At the 50:41 mark, freshman midfielder Caitlin Fisher (Cambridge, MA) lofted a pass in to Yenne, who knocked it past Peterson for the two-goal advantage. She added her third of the day at the 51:04 mark, off assists by sophomore Orly Ripmaster (Boulder, CO) and senior Meredith Stewart (Holliston, MA). The Bulldog's goal came at the 72:35 mark, as four Yale attackers made their way over midfield with two Crimson defenders. Sophomore Elizabeth Jarchow (Brookline, MA) found the feet of Katherine Sims (Milton, MA), who beat freshman goalie Mollie Durkin (Seattle, WA) to close the gap to two. It would be as close as Yale would come, as the Crimson defense would deny the Elis for the rest of the game. All three Harvard keepers saw time on the afternoon, but the victory went to starter Cheryl Gunther (Hauppauge, NY), who made three saves. Durkin allowed the only goal and made one stop, while junior Robyn Scatena (Stockton, CA) made one save. Peterson had eight saves for Yale. Harvard is at home again on Wednesday, when it hosts cross-town rival Boston University at 3 p.m. Yale is in action the same day, hosting top-ranked Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Jamie Weir |
