CAMBRIDGE -- Some 90 years after it competed in the first
American intercollegiate soccer game ever, Harvard nailed down its
500th victory yesterday with an 8-0 trouncing of Fairfield.

"It really is unbelievable," said Harvard coach Steve Locker. "I had
no idea about it until after the game, but it's certainly a wonderful
milestone."

Now with an overall record of 500-333-104, the Harvard men's
team, led by junior Rich Wilmot, sophomore Toure McCluskey and
freshman Zach Viders (two goals apiece), exploded for seven goals
in the second half as it cruised in its first game of the season. "It's not
so much a reflection on myself," said Locker, "as it is the history."
